She decided to create the cooperative to provide a sustainable means of income for these women.
The story of Shrujan began when Kutch experienced a severe drought. Chandaben Shroff, the first Indian woman to win the Rolex Prize Award, went there to assist with a famine relief project. During the trip, she realized that the women excelled at the art of embroidery. The art of embroidery has been handed down from generation to generation and each tribal group has its own unique style of embroidery, stitches and motifs. Chandaben Shroff works with over 3,500 women across 100 villages with 16 different styles of embroidery.
Through "Threads Of Gujarat" Collection, Fashion Compassion and 1701 have showcased the work of women artisans to an international market. This illustrates how traditional craft can be kept alive and made fashionable with contemporary design and aesthetics. 25 women from Shrujan created these one of pieces which gave them an income and opportunity to highlight their talents to a new audience.
