Celebrate Fair Trade Day With Fashion ComPassion!

Each year, the world Fair Trade Day is celebrated the second Saturday of May. What is actually celebrated on that day? It’s not just an alternative economy or a new kind of commerce because there is even more. This day intents to shed light on people, the actors behind the scene, the producers of the fair trade goods we like and enjoy. The invisible ordinary heroes who despite their challenging lives, give their very best to us. Here is the story of one of these heroes that’s worth telling.

Amal Abu Hatab:  Founder& Director of Al Amal Society for Social Development

Meet Amal Abu Hatab a Palestinian refugee in her mid 40s living in Amman, in Al Biqaa refugee camp. When one the Palestyle team members met Amal they were taken by her transparency and dedication to support the women in the refugee camp while she herself led a challenging life.  After the death of her husband, she had to raise alone, with limited income her son, Ismail, now a 23 year old engineer she is proud of. Raising her son into an independent and educated individual is by itself an accomplishment in her circumstances. This is one of her many success stories.

Amal is truly an inspiration; she took a diploma in Fashion Design, is a dedicated social worker and reaches out to other women in the refugee camp to support and empower them through different kind of projects like vocational training.  She is the founder and director of her own organization Al Amal Society for Social Development, established in 2006. Al Amal Society works with Palestyle, the brand which brings you fabulous socially conscious accessories.

Today, 42 ladies work on Palestyle’s different embroidery projects. Such type of work does not only  add value financially to those women or us,  as an organization, but importantly allows us to train the women to work as a team in production of designs, this team spirit raises their positivity, & allows the women to escape from the demanding cycle of their household to a bigger world.” Amal Abu Hatab.

This Saturday, May 12th, show your support to Fair Trade, share the story of the heroes behind the scene like Amal Abu Hatab and encourage brands like Palestyle, because business as usual is no longer an option!

We would like to showcase similar stories of inspirational women, please email us on info@fashioncompassion.co.uk with your story and get it published on our blog!

Meet The Women Behind Our Ethical Brand Bhalo

We know you love our brand Bhalo and their trendy collection, but we thought why not introduce you to the women who help create the brand…from the designer Jessica Priemus to the women artisans that work to create the brand!  Bhalo  is a fair trade design label that aims to create desirable fashion whilst empowering disadvantaged people, especially women, allowing them to work their way out of poverty.

The cotton is hand loomed and hand embroidered by women in rural Bangladesh, not only giving them much needed employment and training, but providing them with simple things that we take for granted – education/childcare for their children, basic healthcare, and most of all, dignity. Fashion ComPassion and Bhalo opposes human exploitation and feel everyone should be given the right to fair employment terms, and given a decent price for their work, Would you expect the same?

What is the name of your blog (with a link) & picture of your self.
The Fashion Collection.

Tell us a bit about yourself. I’m a person who’s always changing whether it’s interests, friends, style, and even eating habits! I believe any change is good change and is always a learning experience, whether you get it right or wrong.
What are your views on socially conscious/ ethical fashion? I think socially conscious/ ethical fashion is such a great concept. We take so much away from society and from the world, and there’s no better way to give back to it than with fashion.
What is your favourite piece from the Fashion ComPassion website? I Would have to say the Gold Plated Copper Cuff & the Shipbreaker dress.

“Fashion ComPassion is delighted to be working with the British Museum.  We feel honoured to be showcasing the first socially conscious fashion brand from the Middle East, at The Grenville Room—it’s a big win for ethical fashion to be part of this prestigious exhibition,” says Fashion ComPassion founder, Ayesha Mustafa.

As one of the world’s most prestigious centers celebrating human history and culture, The British Museum will be holding its Hajj Exhibition from 26th January to 15th April of 2012. The exhibition  aims to educate a global audience on the significance and history of the Islamic pilgrimage of Hajj, allowing non-Muslims to explore the faith visually through artwork, textiles and manuscripts dating back to the time of the Prophet Muhammad in the 7th century A.D.

Palestyle’s collection can proudly be found on our website and together promoting education, employment and self-sustainability for marginalized women in war-stricken societies, it is a monumental achievement for both Fashion ComPassion and Palestyle to be recognized in the British Museum’s exhibition.
